Small bag (8 or so) granny smith apples
2/3 cup granulated sugar
2 tbsps. unbleached all purpose flour
3/4 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 cup all purpose flour
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup butter
Ingredients (Crust):
1/2 cup vegetable shortening
1.5 cups unbleached all purpose flour
3 tbsps. water mixed with 1/4 cup flour
3/4 tsp. salt
Directions:
Step 1: Make the crust by combining the ingredients above using your hands and pastry cutter to combine. Roll out using a rolling pin and place in your pie pan. Use your fingers to create the edge by pinching the dough.
Step 2: Pre-heat your oven to 400 degrees. Core, peel and thinly slice your apples. Place them in a large bowl (my mom and I pictured below).
Step 3: Whisk together coating (2/3 cup sugar, 2 tablespoons flour and ground cinnamon), then add to sliced apples stirring to coat evenly.
Step 4: Combine ingredients for crumb topping, using a pastry cutter.
Step 5: Pour apples into pie crust shell, spread out to create and even layer. Then evenly sprinkle crumb topping across the top.
Step 6: Bake on the middle rack of your oven for 50-60 minutes until golden brown edges and crumbles start to appear.
